That´s a very difficult Q, but here I go. In general, people think a good neighbor is the one who is always there when needed, helping and giving support to the others. However, I would say a good neighbor is the one who acts according to the local regulations and participates in the activities to keep the hometown in good conditions. Besides, a good neighbor is someone who respects the way you and the others live, and share ideas and commentes but doesn,t try attempt to impose their conditions, ideas, or even ideology. And don´t forget that phrase which state That "Good fences make good neighbors", so we have to respect the others' border.
Hey Ross, I think this is out of date, but I would like to talk a little bit about authentic materials (Specific case movies & song). Of course that's good. However, we could find some troubles because vocabulary as for example idioms or any kind of dialect. My comment is not for discussing it, but for give you a good tool which can help us to fine out those meanings. There's a web page -mansioningles.com- and that page has a tool -Diccionario-. once you select this, you can go on a forum discussion for words and phrases, idioms, sayings, etc. There, a lot of people from all over the world participate and teach other some expressions as in used in real. So, let's take advantage of this and learn and learn more words.
Going back to grades, I met a person who is studying English, and once he told me: "I don´t care about grades. I'm here because I want to learn English not because I need a diploma but because I need to comunicate in this global environment". So, it depends on each Ss the way they react to grades.
Maybe a good neighbor should be tolerant enough to hear loud disco music at four in the morning once in a while on the weekend but shouldn't be expected to put up with it every night during the week.
Hey Marco! Thanks for the tip about the forum at mansioningles.com. I think you're right about authentic materials being tricky to understand. (Real language in real life! Exciting, but kinda scary!) Of course they can be difficult, but this is our ultimate goal, right? This is why we bother. Anyway, like you said, songs and movies (maybe songs more) can be very subtle, poetic, not literal, etc. in meanings or the dialect can be unfamiliar. Sometimes a dictionary is not enough. Real people in a forum can be very helpful. I used a dialog from a live forum once in researching the lyrics to a Manu Chau song, "Bixo." I knew the song wasn't in Spanish (or at least no Spanish I could understand) and reading about it, some people debated if it was all Portugese or some particular old/regional dialect of Spanish. Anyway, I got the meaning of the song (which was very strange and interesting) from reading about it in one such forum.
When you think a dictionary might be enough, try onelook.com. It's a super-search of many dictionairies, usually contains idioms and some slang and technical dictionaries of jargon from many fields.
And I like the comment from the person you met concerning grades. Much more authentic, don't you think?
Well, I think that a good neighbor is someone that helps you when you need it, of course is tolerant of noises as Russell said and the most important thing is that he/she is not snoopy, no? what do you think?
Hello everyone¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ I think that one of the most important chararcteristics in a neighbor is that he/she should be a respectful person, to me that's the most important because "respect" is esential in any relationship:(in a couple, with friends, at work, etc) I mean respect is the key to success in human relationships. I also agree with you: a good neighbor is always there when you need it.
Hi there! Good neighbors... what are those? Kidding! I think good neighbors are those who respect your life, habits and lifestyle. And I totally agree with Rusell. They should let you play loud music and if they get angry, we should invite them to the party right? See you soon!
Hey Russell! Well, this has nothing to do with the question but I found it very funny! Please you all tell me what you think about it, ok? See you soon!
Everyone- you have GOT to see this short video Daphne sent in-- Very funny, Daphne! Thanks for that one- although, unfortunately, I think I personally can relate a little too easily to the singer... especially with that great accent, no? Anyhow, too funny--
Upps! Didn't mean to hurt you... I'm sorry! Anyway we love your accent. You may think the same when listening to us speaking English, right? By the way, I've never listened to you speaking Spanish... would you try? XOXO
I agree with you, I think a good neighbor is the one that is tolerant with those "little" things he doesn't like, a person you can trust whenever you need it. In my opinion if you are and if you have a good neighbor goals can be achieved easily because of the support you give to eachother
A good neighbor? well First of all I have to think about myself to see what kind of neighbor I am in order to ask others how to behave. In general I totally agree with Nayeli who said respect is the key to be a good neighbor. I've been in contact with many different people ( I mean from other countries) and I've concluded if you respect the way they are and the way they think they'll do the same towards you. I also believe if the world were more tolerant we wouldn't have as many wars as we unfortunately have. We must start being a respectful neighbor to become a respectful citizen and a respectful human being. Greeting to everybody and God bless you :)
A good neighbor is a person who cares about you and is friendly enough to say more than hello when you greet. Furthermore, he/she would be a camarade to share at least comments about maintainance of the neighborhood and is cooperative to solve common issues with others. Of course, one of the most important characteristics is to respect everyone no matter the price.
I FEEL LIKE WRITING ABOUT TUXPAN, A SMALL TOWN IN VERACRUZ, MEXICO.
I WENT THERE IN OCTOBER 1998. I HAD NEVER GONE THERE AND I WANTED TO EXPERIENCE SOME TIME THERE. TUXPAN IS NOT A CITY BUT A TOWN NEXT TO A WIDE DEEP RIVER. THE TOWN IS QUITE, RELAXING, AND EVEN OLD, BUT THE ATMOSPHERE IS VERY GOOD. WHEN I WAS THERE, I HADS THE SENSATION THAT TIME DIDN'T PASS.
TUXPAN IS A SEASIDE TOWN, SO THE FOOD IS VERY CHEAP, DELICIOUS AND FRESH.
IN TUXPAN, I SAW A BEAUTIFUL SHOW, TUXPAN RIVER JOINS TO GULF OF MEXICO AND YOU CAN SEE HOW THE COLOR OF THE WATER FUSIONS AND CHANGES INTO ANOTHER ONE.
I REMEMBER THERE IS ANOTHER TOWN ACROSS TUXPAN RIVER, THERE YOU CAN ENJOY LOTS OF TYPICAL FOOD AND THE MOST EXCITING IS WHEN YOU CROSS THE RIVER BY MOTORBOAT. I DID IT ABOUT 9 O'CLOCK, SO IT WAS VERY DARK AND THE ONLY WAY TO LIGHT IT OURSELVES WAS WITH SOME CANDLES. I WAS NOT ONLY WORRIED ABOUT IT BUT ALSO DELIGHTED WITH THAT NEW EXPERIENCE FOR ME.
IN TUXPAN THERE ARE A LOT OF HOTELS. THERE ARE SMALL, CHEAP, COMFORTABLE, BIG, EXPENSIVE, MODERN, OR OLD ONES. I LIKED ONE HOTEL WHICH IS LOCATED ON TUXPAN MAIN AVENUE, SO THE VIEW FROM THIS HOTEL IS ESPECTACULAR.
FINALLY, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY TUXPAN IS NOT A EXPENSIVE PLACE. THAT'S VERY CHEAP AND LOCAL PEOPLE ARE VERY FRIENDLY.
IF YOU WANT TO GO ON VACATION BUT YOUR BUDGET IS SHORT, TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THIS BEAUTIFUL PLACE
